Dr. Dickinson attended University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, then moved back to Minnesota to complete his residency and fellowship at Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Dickinson has an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Family Practice and Community Health. He was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Family Practice and Community Health in 1981, became Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor of Medicine in 1995. Dr. Dickinson is board certified in Internal Medicine. He has had many medical appointments throughout the years, including serving as chief of staff at Bethesda Lutheran Hospital 1987-1988. He is a founding member of St. Paul Gastroenterology.
Dr. Dickinson is a member, fellow and former Governor of the American College of Physicians and a member and fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Ramsey County and Minnesota Medical Society. Dr. Dickinson graduated from the William Mitchell College of Law in January 2002.
